Google's Local Search Three Pack. What Is It and How Do You Appear In It.
Clients routinely ask us "How do I improve my ranking on Google. I want to rank at the top when people search for what I do." The process of improving your SEO rankings can be a long one and includes a lot of work writing blogs, researching keywords, and optimizing website content. Small business owners often do not have the time to complete needed tasks or have the budget to hire someone. Monthly SEO services can cost $1000's per month (shameless plug... ours don't...contact us if you're interested). Even then, large companies with unlimited resources seem to hog all of the top spots anyway. However there is another way small businesses can get noticed. The Google Three Pack
What is The Local Search Three Pack?
As you can see, Google display local businesses based on location and search terms. You might think this is done randomly, but Google uses many factor when deciding which businesses to show.
Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.
Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn't specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.
Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.
How To Appear More Often in Local Search (Its a Matter of Trust)
Claim your business' Google My Business page
Your Google My Business Page is the likely the most important part of appearing in Local Search and Google's Three Pack. This shows Google that you are actively involved in your business. For more info see our post about Google My Business
Ask Your Customers for Reviews
Google takes into account how many customers are engaged with your business. So having reviews (and replying to them) shows Google that you are engaged with your business.
Add Your Business to Local Search Directories
Make sure your business is listed and has accurate information in bing, yahoo, yellow pages, yelp etc. There are so many free local business directories. The more links and information Google finds about your company the more Google trusts that your business is legitimate and active. Just make sure all of the information is accurate and matches.
While getting started with improving your ranking on Local Search Results seems daunting, Its actually pretty easy to do. It just takes a little time and planning.
